WHERE DO I FIND MORE INFORMATION ON MEDIATION?
If you’re wondering where to find some information on mediation—whether to learn about the process and/or to find a mediator to help with a dispute, it can be challenging to tell which sources are reputable.
First, for online resources, I recommend the following:
1. http://www.mediate.com
Mediate.com is perhaps the most complete website with everything from mediator listings to a very complete library of articles and videos on the subject.
2. http://www.nafcm.org/
National Association for Community Mediation.
3. http://www.acrnet.org/
Association for Conflict Resolution includes mediators and academics. It has an annual convention with many informative panels.
4. http://www.scmediation.org
The Southern California Mediation Association - an organization of professional mediators.
5. http://www.americanbar.org/groups/dispute_resolution.html
American Bar Association Section of Dispute Resolution
Second, I recommend these ways to find local resources:
Begin with a search for a community mediation or a dispute resolution center. Be sure it is part of a local government agency or is a local nonprofit. These organizations may both provide no or low cost options as well as training to become a mediator.
2. Ask for referrals from local churches, police departments and community groups. They probably won’t be able to provide services but might be able to make referrals. Also, ask for referrals from professionals in local hospitals and assisted living facilities. Again, they won’t be able to provide services, but might be able to make suggestions.
3. Ask the local bar association for referrals but be clear in what you are looking for. They could refer you to local attorneys, but if you want a non-attorney mediator or a no or low cost mediator, you need to be clear in your request.
I hope these recommendations prove helpful.
